Installing maven 3.1.0 on Ubuntu 12.10

To install Apache Maven 3.1.0 on Ubuntu 12.10, take the following steps

Get the latest maven  distribution from http://maven.apache.org/download.cgi



  1. Open the terminal 
wget http://www.carfab.com/apachesoftware/maven/maven-3/3.1.0/binaries/apache-maven-3.1.0-bin.tar.gz
    2.  Unpack the binary distribution
tar zxf apache-maven-3.1.0-bin.tar.gz
    3.  Move the apache maven directory to /usr/local
sudo cp -R apache-maven-3.1.0 /usr/local/
    4.  Create a soft link or symbolic link for maven
       
          sudo ln -s /usr/local/apache-maven-3.1.0/bin/mvn /usr/bin/mvn
       
     5. Now mvn  -version will print in the terminal as
         Apache Maven 3.1.0 (893ca28a1da9d5f51ac03827af98bb730128f9f2; 2013-06-28 07:45:32+0530)
         Maven home: /usr/local/apache-maven-3.1.0
         Java version: 1.7.0_21, vendor: Oracle Corporation
         Java home: /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-amd64/jre
         Default locale: en_US, platform encoding: UTF-8
         OS name: "linux", version: "3.5.0-17-generic", arch: "amd64", family: "unix"
